TR (Telex Release)
A Telex Release in exports is a digital authorization issued by the shipping carrier that allows the consignee to take delivery of goods without presenting a physical Original Bill of Lading (OBL). It is used when the shipper surrenders all original bills of lading at the port of origin, and the shipping line instructs its destination office to release the cargo to the consignee.
When is a Telex Release Used?
Faster Cargo Release: If the consignee needs the cargo quickly and cannot wait for the original BL to be couriered.
Avoids Lost Documents: Eliminates the risk of losing physical bills of lading in transit.
Simplifies Trade Transactions: Especially useful for shipments where ownership of goods is transferred via other means (e.g., open account transactions).
Cost-Effective: Saves courier charges and paperwork handling.
Process of Telex Release
Shipper surrenders the original BL to the shipping line at the origin.
Shipping line verifies and processes the request.
Carrier sends a Telex Release message to the destination office, authorizing cargo release.
Consignee presents identification at the destination to claim the cargo.
Telex Release vs. Express Release vs. Original Bill of Lading
Type Paperless? Used For Risk
Telex Release Yes When OBL is surrendered at Minimal if authorized properly
origin, and cargo needs fast release
Express Release Yes For trusted parties, usually in Slightly higher (no title transfer)
domestic or low-risk shipments
Original Bill of No When title transfer is needed, e.g., Risk of loss/delay in
Lading letter of credit transactions document delivery
Key Considerations
Not all carriers or countries allow Telex Releases.
It does not transfer ownership; it's only a cargo release mechanism.
Always confirm with the shipping line and consignee before using a Telex Release.
Online Telex Release Process for Export
Many shipping lines now allow shippers to request a Telex Release online, making the process faster and more efficient. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to request a Telex Release online:
Step-by-Step Online Telex Release Process
Step 1: Log in to the Shipping Line's Portal
Visit the official website of the shipping line (e.g., Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, etc.).
Log in using your registered account credentials. If you don’t have an account, you may need to register.
Step 2: Locate the Telex Release Option
Navigate to the "Document Handling", "Bill of Lading Services", or "Telex Release Request" section.
Select the shipment/Bill of Lading (BL) number for which you want the Telex Release.
Step 3: Upload Required Documents
Ensure you have surrendered all original Bills of Lading (OBL) at the origin port.
If required, upload scanned copies of the surrendered BL and a Telex Release Request Letter (some carriers may provide an online form instead).
Step 4: Confirm Payment of Freight Charges
Some carriers require that freight and other charges be fully paid before issuing a Telex Release.
Check for any outstanding payments and make necessary payments online.
Step 5: Submit the Telex Release Request
Fill out the online Telex Release request form.
Provide consignee details and other required shipment information.
Review and confirm the request before submitting.
Step 6: Shipping Line Processes the Request
The shipping line will verify your request and documents.
If everything is in order, they will issue a Telex Release confirmation to the destination port and notify you via email.
Step 7: Receive Confirmation & Inform the Consignee
Once the Telex Release confirmation is received, forward the confirmation to your consignee.
The consignee can now claim the cargo at the destination without presenting the original Bill of Lading.
Things to Keep in Mind:
✅ Check Carrier-Specific Requirements: Different shipping lines have slightly different processes. Always confirm the exact procedure with your carrier.
✅ Timely Request Submission: Submit the request well before the cargo arrival to avoid delays.
✅ Proof of Telex Release: Always keep a copy of the Telex Release confirmation email or document for reference.
✅ Avoid Fraud Risks: Ensure the Telex Release is requested by an authorized party and that payment has been verified.
