What is an Import Export Code (IEC)?

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It is mandatory for any business or individual engaged in importing or exporting goods and services from India.

Key Features of IEC

✔️ Mandatory for Import & Export – Required for customs clearance and international trade.
✔️ Lifetime Validity – No need for renewal, but an annual update is required.
✔️ No Business Restrictions – Can be obtained by individuals, proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, companies, etc.
✔️ One IEC Per Business – A company or individual can have only one IEC.

Who Needs an IEC?

✅ Importers – To clear goods from customs and receive shipments.
✅ Exporters – To send goods outside India and claim export incentives.
✅ Service Exporters – For receiving payments in foreign exchange.

🔹 Exceptions: IEC is not required for personal imports/exports or transactions under specific government exemptions.

How to Apply for IEC?

1️ Visit DGFT Website (https://www.dgft.gov.in)
2️ Register & Login with Aadhaar-based OTP or Digital Signature.
3️ Fill Online IEC Application (Form ANF-2A) with business details.
4️ Upload Documents (PAN, Aadhaar, Business Address Proof, Bank Details).
5️ Pay Fees and submit the application.
6️ Receive IEC via email within 1-2 working days.
